Coasts of Light
The contrasts of light in the south of Italy are due to many unusual factors;
Firstly the hot piercing sun has mellowed the stone buildings here for many centuries which give them a worn and welcoming look; also the sky is clearer and brighter in the summer months, which turn the sea an almost luminescent colour of the strongest blues that mingle in and out of emerald greens.
When you bring all these elements together for sunset, what you get is a truly exquisite view of life on the Mediterranean in its most innocent form.
Painters have lived and died in this part of the world and writers have tried to capture its essence within the pages of a book, but it still remains that Sicily’s coastal regions have something special that we can’t quite put our finger on.
The best areas to see the coast at its finest is in the south east of Sicily, around the areas of Mazzara Del Vallo all the way round to the bay of Castellammare Del Golfo.
In Mazzara you will find the beautiful salt pans out at sea, the traditional windmills that ground the salt are still used today and when the sun sets you have a sight that will leave you breathless.
The salt piles that line the shoreline are iridescent in the setting sun and with the windmills turning it really is something to be seen.
Between the towns of Marsala and Trapani the coastline becomes rugged and wild and has an untamed quality and it's here on clear late afternoons that you can get glimpses of the Island chain known as Egadi.
These Islands twinkle in the early evening sun and even if not boarding a boat to visit one of these gems, just to sit and admire these little wonders is a real treat. On Sicily’s side the coastline almost takes a yawn, and its bays become sweeping and generous with their warm golden sands. Here you can walk along the beaches for kilometres and watch as the coastal towns change from small and intimate towns like Sciacca to industrial and brooding Gela, the home of petrol refineries.
If you are feeling like mixing with the in crowd, then the east coast with its ample charms are always ready to seduce the traveller. From pretty coves such as Mazzaro or Isola bella a small but perfectly formed island, you can put on your best sunglasses and bikini and strut your stuff.
The bays on this side of the coast are shingle and rock, however uncomfortable on the feet, the waters are crystal clear and perfect for the snorkel enthusiast. The best thing here is the myriad of good restaurants by the seashore which is a perfect way to wile away the hours.
