Italian or Sicilian ?Parli italiano ? / Do you speak Italian ?  Attempting to speak the language of any country you visit will be appreciated by the local people. In Sicily although Italian is understood the local people speak Sicilian, which although based on Italian has many different words and sayings. It is best however to learn the basics in Italian to communicate. A good phrase book is as essential as your passport if you want to get away and immerse yourself in Sicily.
