Italian or Sicilian ?

Attempting to speak the language of any country you visit will be appreciated by the local people.  Even if it is just the basics making the effort will go a long way and you will more than likely get a friendly response. 

In Sicily although Italian is understood the local people speak Sicilian, which although based on Italian has many different words and sayings. It is best however to learn the basics in Italian to communicate.

A good phrase book is as essential as your passport if you want to get away and immerse yourself in Sicily. The phonetic guides below on the far right are a great way to get the pronunciation right and are included in most good phrase books.
