The Gulf of Castellammare and around.
Driving just over an hour from the capital Palermo brings you to the North west coast of Sicily and to some of the best coastal areas on the island.
Set on a curved bay the gulf of Castellammare is said to be some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole of Sicily, here you can be seduced by the many pretty bays lapped by sparkling clear waters and the high cliffs of Scopello further round the coast.
The town of Castellammare has a magnificent Arogonese castle that dominates the historical centre, and the medieval streets of the town are a haunt for tourists in the summer months.
Heading west along the coast road you stumble across the high village of Scopello an old tuna fishing complex, sadly closed in the 1980s because of the demise of Sicily’s tuna fishing, the village however is a delightfully peaceful area which has some of the best swimming spots on the coast.
The luscious blue waters in the summer months are ideal for snorkelling and the rock formations know as (Faraglioni) impressively tower over the small shingle beaches.
A tasty delight to try here is the” pani cunzatu” (bread filled with local ingredients) only found in the village bakery.
Venturing a little further you will naturally find your way round to the “Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro” The tranquil nature reserve backed by steep mountain slopes.
Finally reaching the northernmost tip of Sicily you will arrive into the town of San Vito Lo Capo, a promontory that plunges into the sea.
Here the beaches are of the whitest sand and the sea a clear azure blue, in the summer months this town becomes a hotbed for Italians who are very serious about there tan, the beach bars are popular here with many being lapped by the gentle sea.
The promontory is served by a lonely but important lighthouse that serves today as a beacon for all passing vessels, the area is also increasingly popular for water sports and the many diving boats that make there way out to the wreck sites around the coast.
September in San Vito is the best time to visit when the town holds its annual couscous festival a ritual that has become very famous in the northwest of Sicily.
This area although not as popular as the other tourist spots in Sicily, has to be some of the most breathtaking scenery and spectacular coastal areas around. Being left relatively untouched by tourism it is a superb route for the independent traveller to take wishing to get a glimpse of Sicily’s true hidden gems.
